Before the Parade Passes By - A History of the Fralinger String Band 1914-2009
Authored by: Edward Regan
Before the Parade Passes By is a history of the Fralinger String Band, from 1914 to 2009, in the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. It is also a story of people who have lived the life of this extraordinary folk culture. The band’s earliest history is detailed with focus n their historic figures and relationships with other string bands, those who have certainly influenced the success of Fralinger. This chronicle is an amazing tale which begins with a group of young boys on a South Philadelphia street corner in 1914 who had dreams of forming their own string band. It concludes almost a century later, in 2009, as the descendants of the original lads of 1914 become established champions of the Philadelphia Mummers’ Parade, America’s oldest cultural event. The annual cry is “To the Hall”, Philadelphia’s famous City Hall, where every year thousands of costumed celebrants strut proudly to perform in this historic extravaganza.
